Live Axel question
steve allen - 31/12/04 at 11:32 AM

I am trying to change the rear brake arrangement by taking off the drums and putting on Discs. the axel I believe is a live Escort axel. can anyone tell me how you remove the Axel shafts so that you can take off the rear drum plates.I have un-done the four small bolts that hold them in place.I didn't want to just take a Hammer to it just in case

You'll need a slide hammer to budge it. It's got an o ring at the other end.

If you haven't got a slide hammer , you could bolt the drum on back to front and whack one side whilst pulling the other!!

I bolted an old wheel on the end, and bashed that with a heavy rubber mallet, north - south, east - west, trying to keep the bashes evenly distributed.
Don't forget to drain the axle before you start - guess who didn't...

Bolt a wheel on and hit the **** TYRE SIDEWALL **** with a 2 kg hammer while pulling at wheel in the diagonally opposite position --- work your way round the circumference in a semi - symmetrical manner -- also give wheel a quarter turn after each hit.

How Many hands do you need to do this.
Seems lilke New years Eve in the A&E department but will give it a go.
