centre take off rack
Lotusmark2 - 17/1/05 at 10:03 AM

Does anyone know of a manual steering rack with a centre point take off for the steering column? (apart from a porsche 911 £125 for a second hand rack!!)

What about something else rear engined like a VW Beetle or camper van/Transporter or possibly one of the old Skodas?

Failing that a McLaren F1 almost certainly has one

Don't think so on the MGF.

If you want to know for sure let me know and I'll go and have a look.

If you could have a look that would be great Andy.

The Hillman Imp pinnion was very close to centre, also a nice high geared rack, down side is the inner track rod ends are very close together --- about 4 inches apart.

Lotusmark2 - 17/1/05 at 02:16 PM

The Imp is too far over I'm afraid.
This is what I am after.

MR2 is not centre take off i'm afraid. All i can think of is aftermarket motorsport racks. Titan Motorsport do them for example, but probably not all that cheaply.

is there any milage in trying to chop a rack? I know bobc i think it is shortened a rack, could one be shortened on one side? ie leave the pinion gear alone, but cut a section out of the housing? longer track rods could then be used to make up the width Don't know about your application or how it would affect bump steer etc.

Ned.

Cita - 17/1/05 at 04:50 PM

I shortened a Escort rack for my single seater to get a center steering shaft.
It's an easy job and takes only a few hours at the most.
Best thing to look for is a manual steering rack which have the pinion at a right angle to the rack like an Hyundai Stellar rack.
I found a site on which the procedure for shortening such a rack was described.
Will try to find the site if you're interested.

Hi Cita
If you could find it, that would be great.

From memory, Alfa Suds, Golfs, some Skodas and possibly even one or two Saabs have centre load racks.
What did the rack in the photo come out of? It looks like a production rack and not a custom one. Can you not get one of them?
How about buying an aftermarket centre load rack? I use them all the time in my buggies.
Here are a few links:

Howe
Saco

Cheers for the links Rorty
The rack in the picture is a porsche 911 rack which is great but at £125 from a salvage yard not cheap!!
Hoped to find a cheaper doner, how much are the racks in your links (average)
Cheers
Mark

I wouldn't have said £125 is that bad, especially if for example you get an escort rack, faff about shortening it, then want to put a quick rack rack and pinion in it which aren't that cheap anyway.

Ned.

Lotusmark2 - 18/1/05 at 09:56 AM

I agree Ned, its not Too bad but if I can find a cheaper option then

Sand rail racks are qiuite cheep but narrow--12-16 inches between inner tierods. center pinion as well--I almost used one for mine as the fit was right but was not to sure about 1.5 turns lock to lock.
Dale

Lotusmark2 - 18/1/05 at 06:01 PM

1.5 turns lock to lock is no problem for me, can you get hold of them over there and if so at what price?? (sand rails are not big in sunny England)

chrisf - 18/1/05 at 06:41 PM

Have a look here.

They may be too short for your application, though.

they look great but as you say they are very short.
In an ideal world I need a 25" centre to centre and 2" of movemant on the rack per rotation of the steering wheel (should equate to 1.5-2 turns lock to lock.

Simon - 18/1/05 at 08:41 PM

DT do them
