rear suspension

hi all
looking for some advice and help with the rear suspension on my stylus. it is live axle .the problem I am having is that I am getting a very pronounced bang or knock from the near side rear. I have fitted new shockers but unable to find the problem with the setup. nothing catching plenty of travel in the shockers so they are not bottoming out as that is what I was thinking of first the only thing I have found is there is quite a lot of play from the diff . all bolts are of the correct size for the shockers and trailing arms wheel bearing seam to be ok no play there. any advice very much welcome regards ian

Is the bang on compression or rebound?

hi
I am not rely sure its just when I go over a bump I get this bang from the near side rear and quite pronounced and its at a low speed 30mph and I don't mean a speed hump it's very annoying as I can not find it .regards ian

one other thing was that having the car on axle stands I could still turn the wheels by hand with car in gear . regards ian

Jack the body up and look how much the axle drops.
It should be about 1 1/2"
If it doesn't, the dampers may be 'topping out' as the body rises after a bump.
Quick fix - get longer top eyes for the dampers.

well the diff will allow this, if you look the other wheel will be turning the opposite way, this is normal, as is the noise of gears. The play will probably be the planet gears and not an issue. Worn diffs either whine or clunk when driving off.
