I'm trying to fit Capri X spoke alloys. I've seen loads of people with them. Cortina and capris are rwd fords from the same era. Surely they
just bolt on.

I tried fitting them and thought the wheel nuts where not going all the way down due to the covered bit on the enclosed nut. Bought open nuts.
That's not the problem. Seems the wheel studs have a shoulder as it goes through the hub that extends a little bit past the hub. The nuts are
getting tight to this. The ford alloy with a nut fitted can cope with at most 3.5mm shoulder. The size of the shoulder on the hub is 8mm.
Have people really had to fit 6mm spacers??
(6mm as 5mm seems to close for comfort)

Have your studs ever been replaced - could they be different from the original Ford factory studs?
Are the wheels you have genuine Ford factory items?
Are the wheel nuts you have genuine Ford factory items?
Each of these factors could produce the symptoms you describe

"Initial" ford nuts are from someone 10 years ago - may or may not be original. New open ended nuts are from rally design last week.
Wheels are genuine ford Capri X spoke (I'm certain or someone years ago went to a lot of effort to cast in ford logo and part numbers)
Hubs are steel so unlikely to be anything but ford.
Wheel studs. I think are original but I've got replacement longer wheel studs (not fitted) that have the same size shoulder.
Currently refitted 10mm spacer I wanted on the rear to the front so have 4 wheels back on my car.

I'm a little confused with the Capri X spoke. Do you mean the same style as mk1 RS ?
Capri Laser wheels were similar in appearance to RS but not the same.
There wasn't may types of allow wheel offered for the Capri and even fewer for the Cortina. The only thing I was aware of that is different is
the offset between Escort/Capri & Cortina but that shouldn't be preventing you from fitting the wheels. just gives clearance issues on full
lock.

I use Capri Laser wheels, (Similar to RS four spokes) and you must use the correct wheel nuts with the loose chafer washer? The washers are quite a
large diameter, so I wonder if plain chamfered nuts are going too far into the wheel, .. hence bottoming out? They also wont secure the wheel
safely.

from memory, RS wheel nuts have a floating flat washer on "tube nuts", the capri had floating conical washers, if there is too much shoulder then you probably have extended studs for use with spacers.

I used the wrong wheel description earlier. Capri laser alloys is what I've got. I bought 60 degree taper wheel nuts specially with floating
washer.
I'd attach pictures but it's not working.
I've got a spare set of uprights somewhere so it's occurred to me to check the wheel studs in those.

It sounds like the wheel studs you are using might be too long, I had 30mm of thread exposed from the rear drum and my wheel nuts are also 30mm long
so don't bottom out once the wheel is put onto the studs. I ran the nut down the thread when the wheel was removed and it only left about 1mm as
it bottomed out on the nut end.

My rears are fine (although they're Sierra drums). I'm hoping the fronts have got longer studs than normal - although for now I'm tempted to just leave the universal 10mm spacers on

Can you not fit fully threaded studs?
From reading your posts, it seems the issue is the unthreaded shoulder? using ebay as a search engine, there is a variety of studs out there...

I thought I had standard studa in. I do have some longer studs which have the same sized / length shoulder as the currently fitted. Today I'll hopefully find my spare hubs and measure the shoulder on those studs.

Hubs I'm using have extended studs, the spare studs I've got are extra long studs. The spare hubs have "tiny" studs with no
shoulder section which I guess are original.

So wasted money on new wheel nuts and time. Grrrrrr
