Hi

What wheel nuts would I need to buy please to fit Ford Cortina Mk1 standard steel wheels (13 inch diameter, 4.5 inch wide and 108mm PCD, not Rostyles) on to Ford Cortina MkIV/V front hubs and Escort Mk2 rear axle on my Locost? The car is currently sitting on 6x13 Ford Capri Laser alloys with what looks like the correct wheel nuts for them.

I am wondering if I need a different angle wheel nut that suits steel wheels and perhaps from a later model with Metric studs? When did Ford switch to Metric studs and for which models?. The Ford Cortina Mk1 probably had 7/16 inch UNF threads so I am guessing I would need wheel nuts for a later car for standard steel wheels (not Rostyles) - would that be some later, not all Mk2 Escorts and for MkIV/V Cortina? What do I ask for? I expect I will be looking at something UK made by Grayson bought from either Burton Power or Rally Design.

The original laser wheelnuts are m12x1.5, with an integral oversized 60° tapered washer. I've not seen any standard nuts for these type wheels that are imperial threaded.
Most ford alloys use this design, there are some recent ones that have no separate washer which are physically compatible but require a different torque.
The aftermarket acorn style nuts won't correctly hold these wheels on, but should be fine with steel wheels.

The mk1 (and certain mk2) escort wheels of the same pattern use flat seated nuts with a flat integral washer, these are imperial on mk1 models, and metric on the mk2 models. Toyota and some modern jaguars use wheel nuts that are compatible.

AFAIK the metric studs replace the imperial studs like for like, there are 3 different stud spline sizes, so you'll need to knock out one and measure it if you're going to replace them.

The quick test to see of someone had already swapped the studs is to try the rear nuts on the front studs, as an m12 nut won't fit over a 1/2 unf stud.

All the steel wheels use a 60° tapered seat whether metric or imperial.
