I have a rather odd application, I'm planning on turning my FWD car RWD. It is a vw golf with mapherson strut front suspension.
In order to do this I need to move my rack, the best way to do this I believe is to swap spindles left to right , and make my previosly rear stear
setup front steer (checked this, it shouldn't have any effect on geometry)
as well to lower the position of the rack, the tie rod ends will bolt in from the bottom of the spindle rather than the top.
this should give me enough clearance for the engine.
of course I'll have to replace the rack with a unit that will steer the car in the correct direction, with similar dimentions,
now finally for the question, how do I determine the best position for the rack?
No idea about the rack positioning on anything other than a Locost mate- sorry.
But I am interested in messing around with Golfs!
Bit of a MKII fan myself. Which model are you converting and what engine/gearbox you planning to use?
Cheers,
James
From a suspenion point of view (to avoid bump steer etc) the pivot point of the rack ball joints needs to be in a line with the pivot points of the
front wishbones when the rack is set centrally. Also needs to be as level and 'straight' as possible.
Apart from that, I've no idea specific to your setup mate sorry.
if you swap the hubs over all the steering angles will be wrong and it wont handle, been there and still got the t shirt
It's not got wishbones, it's McP strut. The rack is on the bulkhead isn't it. I can't see how you're going to do it without making a crossmember of some kind and cutting all the floor out of the car to put a tunnel in. You're on your own with this one I think. Unless you put a chassis in it the monocoque is going to be like a jelly.

Missed the struts bit sorry!!!
Defo on your own then fella!!!
Violent Blue,
See if you can find a friendly Golf Rallye owner who'll let you have a poke around his and see how they do the 4WD. Is it a transverse or
longitudinal engine?
Cheers,
James
Mount a front mounted rack and hubs ?
something from passat , corrado etc ?
Ill have a chat with my next door neighbours volkskraft about it !
of course if you mounted the engine in the back , you wouldnt have rack problems .
volvo 480 shares same PCD as golf and have a low rack mounted pposition ?
