diff back plate
locoboy - 10/3/05 at 09:31 PM

Chaps,

i know the 7.5 diff is 7.5 inches across the mounting bolt area and 7 inch is 7 inches, i also know that the 7 and 7.5 inches relates to the crown wheel size too,

but do they share the same sized back plate?

No mate here, thrid pic down (I think)...

Cheers, Stu.

balls!

Looks like i will have a spanking new 7 inch back plate taking up space in my shed then

This *might* be a bit of luck (for me, anyway...) How much do you want for it mate?

locoboy - 13/3/05 at 05:23 PM

Stu,

On second thoughts i may need it.

I want to get a 3.38 diff and use my 3.62 LSD to cobble together a 3.38 LSD set up.

Now is it best to put the LSD bits into the 7 inch 3.38 diff housing

or

put the 3.38 bits into the 7.5 inch 3.62 LSD housing?

the usual approach seems to be to put the LSD into the new ratio, to avoid having to re shim the cogs. But you would obviously need to make sure that the 7" and 7.5" lsd internals are compatible.

I don't know about the cross-compatibility on this one, but the 7" diff ratio os 3.62:1 and the cosworth 7.5" is actually 3.64:1, pedantic but I don't know what this might infer about differences between internals, apart from obvious incompatibility of the crownwheel and pinions between the two.

Bollocks is there anyone i can contact directly that can give me a definative answer?

I need to know what im going to do - im having a rerar end quandry (oooooerrrrrr)

Got Drum uprights and drum brakes and shafts, Lobro 7.5 inch cosworth LSD with a cracked back plate and a brand new 7 inch backplate

Can anyone come up with a plan out of all that!

i would ideally like disk brakes though ;-)

sell what you have and buy an XR4x4 backend complete, £50 max!

Stu16v - 14/3/05 at 07:19 PM

The 3.38 bits will not fit in the 7.5 housing - or rather, they *might* fit, but the gears will not be meshing...

It might be possible that the 'LSD bit' of the 7.5 inch will fit into a 7 inch case (I doubt there is any extra width, as Sierra driveshafts are the same length IIRC).

It just happens that I have a 7" LSD which I have taken out of my car, as it was rather noisy. It might just be the CWP worn - any use?

Cheers, Stu.
