Ok so I'm adapting my drive shafts to accept new uprights..... Any recommendations as to what uprights to go for? They would need to be resonably common so I can pic them up from the scrap yard (along with brakes calipers etc.) but at the same time will need to be suitable for wishbone suspension...

No we are talking front uprights. The engine I'm using is from an alfa 33 front wheel drive. I'm going to drop it in the back to creat a middy.

Many people when building IRS locosts use a Sierra hub and bolt this to a fabricated upright. I guess this would work for your alfa midi setup

Would love to see any more pic's you have of this car as it is spookily similar to my design.

So can you fabricat an upright yourself or is this something that needs to be purchased? if so can anyone give me a rough idea as to how much it'll set me back and where to get one from?

As far as I know, there is no major problem fabricating your own rear upright. I believe the Sierra hub / bearing carrier bolts on with 4 bolts making a fabricated rear upright easy.

This picture is of a Tiger Avon rear upright - it looks fabricated to me.

IIRC, the Martyni Lotus 23 replica used an Alfa 33 engine.
