Sierra Brake Master Cylinder

Ive just been quoted £53+vat for a master cylinder. Is this good price?

Im concerned about making sure it is right one. I told the guy the donor was 2.0 1992 (H) dohc non-abs Sierra. 2 cylinders were listed. One looked like a steel tube with fitting welded on, the other had no picture. As mine is a cast one i ordered the 'other' type. Can anyone shed some light? The guy in the shop asked if it was Lucas system or Bendix - means nothing to me though.

Im not sure what make it is other than it is not Lockheed.

is that reconditioned?! i can sell you one for £10, not reconditioned but perfect working order. Not sure about different types though - AFAIK, all can be used.

ps, this one is from a 93 non abs 1.8 car.

mounting is different on the steel tube type, think they different size bolts or a different spacing ? someone can no doubt confirm this....

normally considerably cheaper to buy a rebuild kit, usually around £25. Usually comes in a plastic tube, you strip the contents of the old cylinder out, check the bore is ok then slide in the contents of the tube and put the circlip back in.

another question related a bit,

On the brakes international site

i see that for the front you have 2 possibilities of pistons 53.x mm and 59.x mm

Where can i measure that? also i see that both have different pads. I'm totaly sure i use as pads the smaller ones (will it be enough??)

But when i bought the calipers from a scrapyard alla shop layout he gave me them and i noticed that the pads weren't the same (one was bigger as the other) @ home...

how can i measure the piston???
and is the difference visible with the eye??

the only thing that i noticed was the the right one used a spring/wire thing

and the other a more like bracket thing

p.s. i think that the pads thing is very very confusing for the garages, my garage came up with the bigger ones and said that ones are what you need, but i bought already the smaller ones..

TKS - i had similar problem with front pads. My donor is 2.0 non-abs 1992 Sierra. I wanted greenstuff pads which are listed as DP2389. These are actually too big. The ones i should have had are DP2415 which are listed for 1987 - 1990 cars!!! Rather confusing.

It looks like no-one is expert with the cylinders. Fords seem to be confusing because of using parts bin items and non-specific change-over of models. Im hoping that there is either a choice of streel tube type or cast body for the 2.0 donors. Refurb kit sounds like an option? I dont think my cylinder is too bad but i dont want to have to replace it later.

are Diesels anyway good as donor?uprights?? / Brakes??

Ive just contacted my local motor factors. I have been told there are 2 different master cylinders. lucas and Bendix. According to there catalogue the Lucas one is the steel tube variant for which a repair kit can be bought. The bendix one didnt have a pic but i assume this to be the cast body type. I have been given a model number of PMH143 for this type. Unfortunately no repair kit available.

Can anyone confirm the types and makes??

Girling (your Lucas) is the steel tube one, but there is also a Girling cast one....

Bendix is cast.

According to brakesint there are 4 types of master cylinder... ranging from £30 to £70....
