I've just picked up a set of wheels and tyres off eBay, 2 [almost] new tyres and 2 part worn.

Should I put the new tyres on the back of my BEC or the front?

Stick the new ones on the back, they ought to grip better than the part worn ones.

The back ones will wear out faster than the fronts. When you have knackered the back ones, get the whole lot changed for Avons or Toyos...

new tyres on front ----- put it this way a blow out on the front isn't funny -- on the rear it is easier to control.

Or get 2 new tyres now. For all you know one or more of the part worn tyres could be damaged from kerbing etc.

I usually replace the drive wheel tires first. then transfer the worn tires to the other two positions.

Tyre manufactures reccommend that you put new tyres on the rear, thats a change from a few years ago when it was the opposite way around.

The newish tyres are pirelli P6000, the part worn are continental EcoConti.

I plan to use these tyres during the build, to hold the car up, and for the first few hundred miles whilst I'm getting a feel for the car.

My main concern is not to crash it into a tree before I get the hang of it (or aftwards either). So I want the best grip / handling.

Isn't it true that part worns have more dry grip and new tyres better wet grip?

Reworded slightly, with off road tyres they peak when they are slightly worn. However off road tyres have dirt etc. between them.

Road tyres are on a relatively solid flat surface, so there probably ist so much to gain/lose from tyre wear. Untill tyre is illegal of course.
