Question about bushes and brackets
interestedparty - 4/12/02 at 06:57 PM

I have a set of book brackets. Being book brackets they are 48mm across and being as they are (correctly) made of 3mm steel the gap between the sides is 42mm. OK, no problems so far
I have a set of Lolocost bushes and a set of MK bushes. The inner sleeves provided by Lolocost are 46mm long, and the MK ones are 44mm long. It would seem that the MK ones are the least incorrect, but either they are incorrect or MK brackets are wider than the book brackets (the same applies to the Lolocost units). Does anybody know?

John

The MK ones are for use with their bushes and not the book ones, They use a different size bolt too, maybe it's the same for Lolocost.

Cheers

Have you welded the brkts to your chassis?

Chris
I realise that the MK inner tubes are for their bushes, and I do have a set of them. What I really need to know is the internal width of the MK brackets, and that of the Lolocost brackets, or whether there is some reason why both companies would supply inner tubes overlength.

Viper,
no I haven't yet welded the brackets to the chassis, in fact I haven't yet received that part of my chassis, a 'Magic Box', but it is designed for book sized brackets and it will be a drag to have to saw or file away that much material.

I can understand the companies cutting the tube overlength if they had no confidence in their own ability to cut to the correct length, but these all check out to less than .5mm, so before I crank up the metal cutting bandsaw I need to check whether or not I am missing something?

I just rang the Lolocost technical line, and was told that they don't sell brackets but they do sell lengths of 50x50mm box with a wall thickness of 1.5, so-
50mm -1.5mm-1.5mm = 47mm, which ties in with the measured length of their inner sleeves at 46.5mm.
The idea is that the inner tube should protrude from the nylaspa bushes at each end, that the tube should be bolted up tight in the bracket and then the bushes turn around the inner tube to provide the suspension movement.
I'm told that polyurethane bushes (I do not believe that the MK bushes are poly) are not meant to work this way, it is intended that the poly bush material itself should flex to provide the suspension movement

Are you sure they said 1.5mm, book brackets are 3mm and I have used 1/8" (3.25mm). I would have thought 1.5mm brackets would bend in a strong breeze let alone any serious braking etc
50mmx50mm RHS is available everywhere and is really cheap, just remember to cut out the seamed side!

I got Steve (Merlin) to make my brackets and wishbones and gave him an MK bush. After a few attempts they all fitted together lovely, though that probably isn't much help. He made my brackets with enough clearance either side to fit a 12mm washer (MK bushes take M12 bolts).

If you are interested i can fabricate new brkts to suit your bushes etc at £2.00 each
