Just a quick question - on the Sierra steering column there's a small black plastic thingy that engages with the wheel hub. This thingy has a cam that cancels the indicator by flicking a little lever inside the indicator switch.

My question is - where should the cam on the thingy be set when the wheel is in the straight-ahead position? Currently I have it 180 degrees around from the lever but it only seems to reliably work in one direction, although the switch release lever works properly both ways if I push it with my finger.

As you may guess, the Haynes Manual of Lies gives no idea of the correct setting...

I think it should go inline with the indicator lever, then when you turn your wheel to go left and have the left indicator on the cam will go past the cancel switch and then when you turn it right to go back to central it will push the cancel button when you get near to central.

Standard Sierra steering wheel has a cut out to locate onto cancelling ring in line with the indicator switch .

There lies the problem - I haven't got a standard steering wheel! My Astrali hub can be set in 6 positions...


Can someone with a standard Sierra wheel (that's currently off the car) tell me the position of the notch when in the 'straight-ahead' position?

You can work it out by trail and error.

The plastic ring has a cam which cancels the indiactor and a single tooth, like a tab, that engages with the steering wheel boss.

IIRC the cam should be located at 9 o'clock, dead centre with the little lever on the indicator switch.

When you indicate, the lever pushes out and contacts the cam. Then, as you turn the wheel, the lever (which is sprung) falls off the end of the cam with a click. Returning the wheel to the straight ahead position makes the side of the cam push the lever sideways and this resets the indicator stalk.

So, positioning the plastic ring is easy, just set your steering dead straight and rotate the ring so the little lever on the indicator is in the centre of the cam.

Now, the tab. Obviously you have to place the steering wheel boss such that the tab locates in the matching notch (in the boss), so there isn't much choice.

Your steering wheel is probably not straight at this point, which is why you're encountering intermittent problems with the self cancelling (the cam isn't disengaging on one direction properly).

If you've got a separate wheel & boss (like the Mountney arrangement), unbolt the wheel from the boss and reposition it so it's as straight as possible. If it isn't, you need to turn the wheel so it is, and get your steering aligned properly (track rod ends adjustment).

As luck would have it i have a stockpile of rubbish including a sierra wheel,just incase i do it all again

Wheel is in dead straight possition so on the column the notch would be at 21.00hrs when in place.

That's exactly the info I need - the cam is set exactly in the same place as the reset lever, as Jon suggested.
