Anyone know the best (and legal) way to join the cable once shortened ?. Seen the way some kits use clamps at hand brake end swivel but dont know where to get these clamps. Any ideas !
I shortened the cable got a new nipple from a local lifting gear company crimped it on in the big vice then silver soldered it using plunbers solder and a blowlamp ( or you could braze it if you have the tackle ). It hasn't failed yet.
I did similar to Jonti. Extra security can be had by bending the strands out where they emerge from the nipple then bending back to form a ball, pull the cable until the ball is jammed against the nipple then solder. We used to use this trick on motorbike cables to good effect.
homebase sell the clamps.
I used five on about 9 ins of cable running side by side.

I made up a balance bar so that I could adjust the cable once fitted. The only bit you may need to get done is the two bolts which need a hole drilled down their length, easy on a lathe. Have a look on my photo page. Also means that fitting a new cable is easy, just cut to length and re clamp. Once you have the bolts drilled grind a couple of grooves in the thread end, thread the cable through the bolt (head end to thread end) unravel the cable into two strand, fold the strands back into the grooves and clamp by threading a nut over the bolt thread trapping the cable.
