Drive shaft inspection

So I've now got my Sierra 4x4 back end (diff, shafts, hubs and brakes For £60) but how do I check the drive shafts? In other words how much movement can there be if i hold one end and twist the other.If they are crap does anybody know what it'll cost for recon ones??

If its the drive shafts with bolt through cv joints then they are repacable if necessary. It is possible (with care of order of dismantling & position of parts relative) to strip & inspect components of cv joints for wear. This will usually manifest its-self in one of two ways:-

Audible when being driven, a loud indeterminate rotating knock that comes and goes with no apparent cause but definately from the back end, (sounds almost like an extremely loose wheel).

Visual on the cage that holds the balls into the the outer collar. the sides of the the cage into which the balls recess will have indentation marks where they have been knocking.

cure = fit new with new cv joint & boot, about £70 from ford.

other than that, providing the joints move easily theres not a lot more that you can check.

So I take it you mean just paint em' up and put them on Jeez, £280
