What handbrake kit?
timbo7 - 2/1/06 at 11:06 AM

Need abit of direction here guys.

I need a handbrake kit for my Stuart Taylor ZX9R running english axle and sierra rear calipers on MKII discs.

I want to mount the handbrake on the trans tunnel top.

What list of parts do I need (either part specific or donar model specific) and where from? ie. Partco?

Does the donor cable need modified.. if so how?

Do I need a handbrake light switch for SVA?

Cheers guys.

Sounds like you'll have to make a cable to suit whatever you use, so just find a handbrake that fits your purpose and use that. The Sierra handbrake and cable is usable and would fit your calipers but you'd need it shortening. You don't have to have a handbrake warning light, if you can't see it on the top of the tunnel you need specsavers .

Althougth you don't need a handbrake warning light/switch it is a handy means of testing the brake fluid level warning light . (uses same light)

Hi Timbo,

Good to see you found the site. Sorry you found the.......!!

AFAIK you do need a red brake fluid low indicator and a means of testing the lamp.
It is common to use the handbrake switch to perform this function as well as a button on the reservoir.

Have you got a copy of the latest SVA manual. Unfortunately mine is from Dec 2000, I think that there have been a few revisions since then.

Cheers,

Colin

? cryptic message query.
Manual link here with revisions up to March 2004 if he wants to read it or download it. It doesn't tell you what kind of handbrake to use with Sierra calipers though.
Have you used bolt on brackets for the calipers, and MkII what disks are they? I have the Capri axle and am looking at a way of converting it to disk as the drums are knackered and new ones are a bit steep even with discount.

How about the Sierra handbrake then?
You can then use the standard cable too.
You can make it look half decent with a Richbrook cover and gaiter. Rescued attachment handbrake.jpg

Hi Colin... yeh.. found it... I'm now on that many forums I haven't enuff hours in the day to get through them.

Pete... Colin is refering to MCOB (Miserable Caterham owning Bastards' thread.

Pete... do you want a few pics of my disc set up on the english axle? I currently have the axle apart on the garage floor. I've taken the staggers and completely stripped the race car to get it fully painted. Also I'm moving to Class 9 from Class 3 for the 2006 race year which requires road going mods. Yes I have used mounting brackets for the calipers. Discs are Mark11 escort.

It would be handy to see how it's done. Could you put a couple in your archive? Are you going from bike to car engine in the new class, I'm slowly building a ZX9 engined Locost at the moment, I have a Pinto in the one I have now.

'tis a trifle bright innit

No... I'm going from Class 3 lightweight bike engine to Class 9 "fully of heavy unneccessary MOT passable sh*te" bike engine.

The reason is that in Class 3 I'm up against 2.0 Swindon XE's, Darrians with Millingtons, Busa's etc.. so I'm getting a little bit arse whipped. In Class 9 I'm up against a bigger no. of 900-100cc BEC & class A tyres as opposed to slicks.

Darren at GTS can supply me a modified kit complete to suit sierra. Am picking up at Autopsort next Friday. Will let you all know of suitability.
