Handbrake

Now then Chaps,

I've come to the conclusion that my handbrake set up is pants, living in the hilliest city in England dosen't help!

I've got a Cortina axle and a shortend version of the Cortina handbrake cable, anyone have a better idea?

Cheers

Chris

Don't give me that. This is just an excuse to not take it to Stafford!

Move to Florida...flattest place on earth....(maybe)....probably 80%* of handbrakes are siezed through lack of use...

(*wild guess)

Is the lever pulling the cable enough? Big problem seems to be getting the cable adjusted to get handbrake to tighten enough after 4-5 clicks.

My experience is that Americans DONT USE handbrakes at all.

They call em emergency brakes - yeah - id be fully confident in an emergency - would be better to jump out.....

as 90% of yank cars are auto, they just put em in park position.

I dont think its terrain related, just bad practice related!

ps

my granada system works fine - biggest problem is that i have to drop the diff to get to the adjusters

Oh I agree Steve, my terrain comment was just a response to Chris...BTW many here call it a parking brake, which is probably the best description.

Thanks for the replies chaps, judging by what Jon & Zetec say I'm wondering if the cable's partialy seized, I'll try a new cable first before I do anything drastic!

Lack of tax (and confidence) prevents me from going to stafford in it, the furthest I've been is the test station!

I used the Capri handbrake cable shortened to suit and the Sierra lever with an extension welded on where the cable connects to increase the leverage.

yours, Pete.

I've used similar set-up to Jon on my Cortina handbrake, with two stainless mini u-clamps to hold together cutdown cable, looks fine to me.

I used FIVE to join my cable!

you can get mini cable clamps from Homebase. In the section where they keep rope and chain. I laid approx 200mm of cable alongside and put the five along that length.

Thanks for all the replies guys, problem now solved!

Found two handbrake cables yesterday at Stafford, Peugeot 505, one for each side and a pound each!!!

The business end is similar to the Cortina, just had to shorten the spring slightly, the other end is a plain nipple (oooer!). joined it with the cable clamps, works a treat.

The old cable was VERY stiff, through lack of use.

Cheers

Chris
