Sierra column to escort rack
Mark Allanson - 9/3/03 at 10:44 PM

I have a Sierra column and lower UV shaft and a escort rack. The Sierra lower UV shaft connection is massivly bigger than the splined shaft of the escort rack. Does anyone know of another lower shaft with the same spine configuration as the escort.

Another scrapyard hunt next weekend, just need to know what I am looking for!

Thanks

Mark

Im sure you can use an allegro one or herald? the early sierras i think were the smaller type of splines too but again a while since i looked for mine.

I will be in that position soon.

Why can't it be a piece of normal round tube?

"Why can't it be a piece of normal round tube?"

The bottom joint has internal splines to match the external splines on the input shaft of the rack, also there is a machined groove for the lock bolt

I am in the process of checking other non power steering small fords of recent vintage as I went to most of the scrap yards near me, and there were no Mk2 Escorts, Allegro's or Heralds!

The early Sierras did have a joint to fit the escort rack as that is what is on my car.Rally design and Burtons do a universal type joint that looks as if it would be better than the rubber joint , not sure of how to attach it to the shaft though.

This may not be much help but the capri has the same lower joint as the escort. I know they are as hard to find as mk 2 escorts these days, but its another option.

mark,
i've got a sierra column and mk2 escort rack, they fit together like a dream, can't tell you the age of the sierra doner as it had no plates on. In my sierra manual it shows a manual rack/shaft with a rubber flexi joint, and the power steering rack/shaft with a u/j type joint.
cheers phil...........

My Sierra column donor is on an F plate and that mated with the Escort rack perfectly too.....

Stu,
Did your sierra have power steering? Mine did and this could be the difference, mine was G reg.

Come to think of it, I think you could be onto something.....
I'm sure that a mate wanted to convert his Sierra to PAS. And when he thought he had everything from the scrapyard ended up fooked on the 'weekend' conversion.

Guess what I'm getting from the scrappy tomorrow,

Mark Allanson - 15/3/03 at 04:55 PM

Just back from the scrappy, a manual rack lower shafts fits fine on the escort rack, cost a quid!!!

Also got an X19 pedal box, complete with rear reducers and all master cylinders for 2 quid, and a series 2 Fiat uno fuel filler complete with the non return valves for a fiver - sits back contented!!!!
