Quick Racks - 2.4 vs 2.9
MikeR - 3/4/06 at 01:37 PM

Folks, what is the difference between the Rally Design 2.4 and 2.9 quick racks?

I remember a topic about another manufactures seven where the 2.9 quick rack was just a normal 3.2 quick rack with lock stops to reduce the amount of turns.

Is this the case with the Rally Design racks?

Which rack would you go for?

Having just replaced a 3.5 turn standard rack with a RalDes 2.4, I feel qualified to answer this one - partly.

The 2.4 quick rack definately has a faster gearing - I rarely need to move my hands on the wheel, even when parking.

Down-side is that it is hard to turn the wheels when stationary (but you shouldn't do that anyway), you feel more 'kick-back' through the steering wheel when you hit bumps, and you have to pay more attention. It's always been the case in my car that if my mind wandered, so did the car, but now it wanders quicker! I guess it could get tiring on a long run, but I rarely do that anyway.

I was impressed with the quality of the RalDes rack - definately not 'cheap and nasty'. Delivered 1 day after ordering, too!

Hope this half-an-answer helps...

David

cheers, if you look through other threads about bump steer and tracking you might find you can reduce the wandering to make it less tiring to drive.

(just remember someone else complaining about that, after adjusting the settings he said it was like a different car)

i have a raldes 2.9 rack on my mk2 escort and have no complaints whatsoever. great positive feel throught the wheel and makes 'spirited driving' much more enjoyable. combined with the polybushes and grp 4 coupling the steering is far far better than before. i think at the end of the day it comes down to price the 2.9 was about £50 cheaper when i bought mine

the choice is totally yours mate

so its definately quicker than the old rack then?

yes it definatly feels quicker to me

I've got a rally design 2.9 rack. Excellent quality and an amazing price for what you get. Definately a genuine 2.9 ratio with the same travel as a standard 3.5.

I always found the 2.4 a bit frantic for cruising and also my front wheels will be driven. Those reasons as well as the great price are why i went for the 2.9.

depends a lot on driving style Mike.

In your position I would go with the 2.9 ratio if I were being honest.

With my driving style I think the 2.4 will be better!

Bear in mind my std sierra is only 2.8 turns though! (XR4x4 power rack is pretty fast for a std car!)

No - it's not the car - it's me!

I'm sure all the 7's are the same - you just have to pay attention just that bit more than in a typical tin-top.

The usual question applies here do you use it on road or track mostly.

I started with a standard Escort mk2 rack which was fine on road. First trackday though and everyone and including myself who drove the car wanted a quicker rack. So I've swapped it for a R. D. 2.4 rack and have been much happier with it.

Yes the steering can be a little heavy when manouvering at slow speed but I'll eventually swap to needle roller bearing top whichbones which makes quite a difference!

I should emphasise that I have no problem with the steering - it's different, that's all.
