Right,

Having finished grinding off the origonal brackets on my stnd escort axle (and having set fire to both myself and the garage!) I'm ready to weld the brackets on.

Is it strictly necessary to remove all the stuff inside before you weld the brackets on? I've looked in the haynes manual on how to strip all the bits out and, without the slide hammer and other "specialist" tools, I think I'll do more damage than good. I've drained all the oil (well the oil kind over fell out all over me when I undid a bolt) is this enough??

If you can weld you can make a slide hammer for nowt with a bit of solid bar and tubing to go outside. better safe than sorry. mine only lasted the distance but thats all I needed. I was told I could damage the internal oil seal by a mechanic with lots of MK2 / Locost experience. Well worth the piece of mind for me .... but thats just me !

I cannot weld to save my life (well I can, a bit!) was going to get my mate to do it, especially as its the suspension. will see if I can find a garage that will let me borrow their hammer for a sec. like you say, better safe than sorry

You will only need a sliding hammer if it is tight m8..... give it a try first, I had 1 side fall out and the other tight. I didn't use sliding hammer though, as I didn't have one and wanted job finished so I used long set screws and pushed it out from behind.
PS Welding causes major build up of scale etc inside axle.. so removal is my advice.
