I've read a few posts on here now about people stripping the lock barrel and all the housing etc from a sierra steering column. I'm thinking of doing the same so I get get the clocks in near the line of sight behind the steering wheel.

Does anyone have a pic of the column with all the barrel and shrouding removed - so I can take a peek before I reach for the grinder and end up having to go back down the scrappies ?

If the reason you are doing it is only to get the clocks in the line of sight through the wheel then don't bother it will make little or no difference.
Look in my photo archive.
I've got the clocks where you are suggesting with the shroud etc still intact.
It takes carefull positioning but it can be done.

But as BKLOCO says, most of the metal you take off is on the sides/underside anyway so it won't make that much difference

Thanks for the replies. What about if you take the remainder off ? Is that possible - doe the remaining ally provide support other than to hold the steering lock and key barrels ?

I may be misunderstanding your intentions, but iirc you will need a steering lock of some sort for SVA.

The Aluminium bit does come off but it hold top bearings for the steering column so it needs to stay.

AFAIK, there have been a few STMs fo through SVA without a steering lock. Didn't do SVA myself but aren't they looking for any sort of immobiliser?

I've stripped off my steering lock to accomodate the paddle shift kit.
afaik you need 2 forms of imobilisation for SVA, planning on ignition system and a battery cut off fia switch which is apparently fine too.

Having just looked through the SVA manual it says you need some form of anti-theft and lists steering locks, immobilisers etc. There isn't anything directly about how many you have - though my manual is a good few years old so things may have changed.

Ignition key is one form of security, steering lock or immobiliser, cut off etc. is another. You must not be able to disable the steering while the engine is still running, this is a fail.

This is about as stripped as you can get it!

I've got a removeable boss welded to the Sierra column.
