My abandoned project lowcost came as a rolling chassis, (Escort rear axle), plus pinto 2l. engine and type 9 box, but no propshaft. Will half a Sierra propshaft be suitable, or are the tubes too short? (Needs to be about 750mm long overall). Is a P100 shaft suitable?( Don't think this has a centre bearing).

the sierra has quite a large rubber donut on the front of the shaft at the gearbox end. Its thought bad to use this as it may fail under the incresed angles put on it by a locost.

if you make your own prop you need the front half with a std uj type spider joint. I have heard these can come from transits.

I didnt like the idea of a mix and match prop shaft - its safety critical and spins up to 7000 rpm. if it breaks, you might too.

I got one made to order all new parts from reco-prop

about 150 quid all up.

Speaking of getting broken by a failed prop shaft .... I'm planning to shorten the MK2 shaft from the doner car, any advice on the best way to do it i.e. join at the front middle or back, any advice on getting the two bits in line i.e making a jig.
Also, if the worst happens, is it worth adding any protection tubes to the tunnel. I've seen a diagonal bar on the middle section ..... any good or is more needed.

You'd need an accurate jig or cut to length and put each cut end inside an exact fit tube to keep it straight then weld that on. However I've seen a Robin Hood, which has a much more solid metal sided tunnel, where the prop broke and thrashed around making the tunnel cross section circular - right by the driver's thigh. Personally, I'd get it shortened professionally.

I had a quote from auto-prop ( http://www.autopropuk.co.uk ) for linking a Rover V8 engine to a Sierra diff. They quoted £96+vat which was for all new parts rated at 400BHP+ with a telescopic system to take up slight changes in length. Seemed good value to me and when I asked if he'd done one for V8 to Sierra before he said they had literally done thousands! 3-4 day lead time typically.
