Wheel nut tapers, different?
the_fbi - 24/9/06 at 07:46 PM

Long story, but I'm short of a few wheel nuts, I only currently have 2 per wheel.

Bought some tapered nuts a while back, they have a separate, although non-removeable and fitted to the nut, tapered washer.

Put a few onto one of my wheels, but the nut hits the wheel before the taper does.

From memory they were 60 degree taper and supposed to be for a Ford alloy, I'm using them on a Caterham "prisoner" alloy so they should be OK.

Are there different tapers available or have I just been unlucky?

Only solution appears to be to get the protruding nut part turned down.

You could just go to a scrappy armed with a wrench and remove the nuts you need from various fords. Or is it not that simple for some reason.....Oli.

Sounds like you need the straight shouldered RS alloy wheel nuts, they are not cheap.

Nah, I definately need tapered ones.

These are the ones I've got, as you can see the "nose" sticks out too far so the taper washer doesn't touch the wheel, hence it rattles

I think you need the Capri Laser type. I`m
short of one of them myself. Looked through all the alloy wheel companys catalogues.....still can`t find a prisoner model

Speedshack are pretty good for wheel nuts too.

If you are using Sierra wheel studs they are not threaded all the way to the bottom, they have a shoulder that the nut hits before it tightens to the wheel in some cases.

Good tip, better check that ASAP.

Quick solution would be 5mm spacers, available almost anywhere.
