steering wheel boss
dilley - 28/9/06 at 08:56 PM

Im fitting a new mountney boss and steering wheel to a sierra column, the new boss does not seem to be such a tight fit on the splines as the old one, it has a slight movement from side to side untill tightened, I have even removed the column to fit it just so as I can see exactly what is going on ?

any thoughts?

Andrew.

I think from what I have read in the past that the quality of some bosses leaves a lot to be desired
As long as you can get it tight it should be OK though.

Yes the quality is variable and the castings inconsistent. I had to have the ID of mine skimmed to clear the steering lock casting.

I have just fitted it to the column in the vice it fits ok, it seems very notchy on the bearings though, it may have something to do with the fact that its under compression with the spring when all tightened up?

IMO the Mountney bosses are shite. Get a Momo boss, they're not much more.

That's what mine was like, are you sure it's not the inside rubbing against the column?

Ive just fitted the old one and it fits fine and all turns freely.

I couldn't get a decent one anywhere, so I made my own using the aluminium centre from a sierra wheel
