Hi All,

I have a Mk II Escort steering rack (2.5 turn). Somewhere in the post between the UK and Australia.
Not having the dimensions fro the thin is holding up my design process at the moment.
So if someone can point me at where I might find the dimensions or amble out to the shed and run a tape over one I'd appreciate it.

The image below shows the dimensions I think I need to know.

How accurate do you need it? within a couple of mm okay?
If so, I'll go and measure mine (it's bolted on at the mo so a bit difficult for some of the sizes!

A = 30mm
E = 20mm
Bmax = 120mm
Bmin = 15mm

Thanks again the dim D is much bigger than I expected from peering at pictures in Rons book.

This would explain though why I've read of LC's having bump steer issues.

I should have put in the picture that D is the centre to centre distance on the inner pivot points, is that what you measured?

Dimension D is from the outside to the outside of each ball joint.
From the centre to centre of the ball joints is (approx) 580mm

I've got the rack mounted higher up at the moment to see what effect it has on bump, once I get the bottom bones finished (this weekend:cool I'll see if it works or not

This book is a must buy for everyone on this forum I think, but anyhow I hope your planned mods come close to matching the diagram ;o)

Yes indeed I hadn't seen that before but it's exactly what I was aiming at, going to use rose joints for the TRE's and mount them to the top of the hub steering arm instead of below, as the angle with the rack mounted high would be to much, IMO anyway.
the traditional rack position seems to require a shortened rack in order to avoid bump steer, but doing it this way should improve things (I hope )

If you are building a book chassis then its already far to wide !

I have cut 3" out of the external tube and 4" out of the rack to make mine fit as the above diagram

Before you start making brackets and welding all up (my mistake) fabricate enough to hold the rack in place and test the bump steer.

Then decide how much to shorten it, once in place test again and make up the finished mountings.


NB/ to cut and shut is easy enough, chop the tube inside the brackets, chop the rack close to the prawl or better still shorten the long end and get new threads cut.
