Can I use any 12 volt coil or does it have to be a ford one for my Pinto engine ?

Depends on whether or not you have points or electronic ignition and if you have a ballast resistor or not.

More info required

Its dizzy with points ... Not sure what you are o n about with Resistor ... am in over my head

You need to measure the voltage at the coil on the positive side, if its 9v you have a ballast resistor, if 12v you dont.

You need to make sure you get a coil designed for a points dizzy, an electronic ignition one will work, but will wreck the points pretty quick.

If there is no coil present he will get 12v irrespective of wether a ballast resistor is used or not.

Have you considered fitting electronic ignition to get rid of the points all together. Ive just listed a full complete electronic system that is easy to fit - all oem ford stuff. Ive got exactly the same set up on mine at the moment and it works a treat. Just fit and forget.
