Escort steering rack lock nuts - or not
Shamrock GS - 27/1/07 at 10:23 AM

Canb anyone tell me if a Mk 2 Escort steering rack should have lock-nuts to hold on the rod ends?

I had them on a mak1 rack but the man at the motor factors says they dont need them for the reconditioned Mk 2 unit I have just bought.

If they are needed any idea where to get? The mk1 ones are the wrong thread

Cheers

Gary

SVA & MOT Legal requirement

I have no idea whether they are a legal requirement or not - but it would seem a sensible idea to have them. It's always nice to know that your steering adjustment will stay where you put it...

Legal requirement all the way. I think ford may stil do them.

Rally design do i believe and lolocost.

eh? what is spectial abouot this rack of yours that tops the track rods fromt tunring? (if tjey dn;t turn. adjustment can be doen in full turns of the track rod end thatwould meant its removal each time. Sounds like BS.

They mmust have lock nuts to prevent the rods from unscrewing out ofthe track rod ends.

The thin nuts - called half nuts are M14. Quite hard to get but if you do get stuck, I can get M14 full nuts t my local fasterrner place.

I have two spare here in front of me, they have a box full at the Ford dealer where I bought them.

Thanks folks - I thought this would probably be the case. The reconditioned unit came from Burtons and I assumed (mistakenly) they knew what they were talking about

Burton should know better than that, Especially as they probably sell the nuts.
