Steering link issue ( A B*gg%r moment)
jollygreengiant - 1/2/07 at 07:19 PM

Ok I know someone will come back with the "use the search answer". I did but nothing obvious found.

Been of work, on holiday, all this week, so I have been making some progress. I had a couplke of oops moments (wrong bits ordered from local factors but corrected). However this afternoon whilst starting to prep for the welding in the engine bay BLITZ, (engine mount fabrication and steering column extension) I hit a bit of an impasse. I think I know the solution but just want to confirm before I go off tomorrow scavenging for bits.

I've got the Granada column mounted in the car (not a problem), I've got the Mk2 Escort steering rack bolted down in the chassis (not a problem). So this evening I cut my Granada flexy coupling in two, located the triangle bit on the column and then tried mounting the female splined bit onto the rack. It was a like a little thin twig in a bucket.

Now then I assume that I need to find a Sierra lower column coupling to fit the 14mm splines on the rack. If someone could just confirm (or deny) this for me I would be most grateful.

Ta very muchly.

My steering shaft uses a sierra lower bit, with the rubber bit and it definately mates onto the Escort rack. So yes, you need to go down the scrapies tomorrow morning. At least the forecast says it will be bright and sunny

Cheers lads, I thought that was the answer but I just wanted to be sure.

Maybe tomorrow I will also find some sierra 14 steel rims so I could, if things progress ok during the weeekend, drop it down onto its undercarriage soon.

You can buy solid uj type couplings from a few suppliers which will weld to the end of your Granada lower link instead of the rubber one. They look like a swivel joint from a socket set.

Fiesta colums also fit the mk2 rack if that's any help.
