Perished rubber boots!
bigandy - 2/3/07 at 10:20 PM

Evening folks,

I've just noticed that the rubber boots on my steering rack (escort I beleive) have started to crack and perish in the folded bits. I'm guessing this is a bad thing, especially for SVA, so does anyone know any miracle cures, or is it new boots time?

Also what is the bst way to make them last a bit longer in the future? These were installed on the rack when I bought it around 2 years ago....

Cheers
Andy

There's no easy way - you will have to change them

Unusual to have them perish in two years - they normally last ten years or longer!

I did think it was a bit odd that they have gone so quickly. I suppose they could have been sat on a shelf somewhere for years before I bought them though

Any ideas where I might be able to get some replacements? Motor factors?

Cheers
Andy

Nine quid for a pair from Burton Power search for item number "TSG3".

Ask for universal ones at any automotive suppliers. Should be cheap.

Univeral ones are made of better quality rubber as they are designed to be stretched over various sizes of rack, my original boots lasted 18 months (perished before I finished!), the universals are still on 2 years after SVA pass, and untouched

That's exactly what has happened to mine. I am still halfway through building the car, and the rubber boots have started to perish before I have finished the car.

Maybe a little silicone grease would make them last a bit longer.

Perhaps. I think I am going to try some of these "universal" ones from a motorfactors, and see how they last. If I leave buying them/installing them until the car is nearly on the road, it should help them last as long as possible!
