Do I need a driveshaft?
8smokingbarrels - 18/7/03 at 08:15 PM

Im thinking of using Fiesta uprights which of course are FWD

As my car will be RWD- the front driveshafts are redundant- but are they? What I mean is- will the hub have too much freeplay because it is no longer torqued up to the driveshaft (by the driveshaft nut)

Looking at the upright (essentially the lower part of the fiesta strut) the bearing seems to have little room for lateral movement so Im not sure if being torqued up to the driveshaft will make much difference. Hope someone can advise!

you can pop the cv joint off the drive shaft, just use the joint or the bearing will go awol in a few yards

Thx for the reply Conrod

I will take ur advice on this- to be honest its in line with what I thinking of doing. Less chance of the bearing moving about if its securely attached to the end of the driveshaft.

The guy at the scrapyard nearly had to resort to a sledgehammer to shift the mondeo upright off its shaft! Not to mention the trouble I had getting the brake disc off - thank god for angle grinders!
