sierra brake caliper siezed
smart51 - 2/6/07 at 11:44 AM

My front left sierra brake caliper started sticking on yesterday. I've taken it apart and the piston has 2 rings of rust round it., one where the seal is and the other near the bottom.

I've heard that the pistons are not repairable if rusted. Is this true?

Where is a good place to get new / recon calipers from?

This is for a new 1.3/1.6 sierra caliper, with this be for the solid disc only?

This is for an XR 4x4 front. Is this for the larger diameter disc only?

Local factors will be hard to beat, I would bite the bullet and get a pair, the other side has had exactly the same amount of use.

My local motor factor said he can get some if I go in on Monday when places are open. So as to not lose a sunny afternoon, I took a bit of 1200 grit wet and dry, wetted with brake fluid and cleaned up the piston and housing. Both came up clean and showed no signs of pitting or corrosion. I've been out for some fun and it works fine.

So here's the question, will it last or should I order some new ones ready?

It'll last as long as you got the dust seal back in. Thats usually the cause of the problem and is a swine to get back as it often swells with age. Ford do new piston/seal kits or at least they used to.

replace em both. For what they cost why compromise, they are bound to pull up slightly unevenly and any sticking at all will make you get a variable pedal travel which is awful when you realise its happening!
