Diff rebuild
loafersmate - 18/8/03 at 03:34 PM

After having stripped my spare sierra diff to the bare bones I now need to put it back together! Anyone know the correct proceedure for setting the crownwheel to pinion clearance with the two screw-in bearing carriers?

Cheers

Ben

I have a mazda dealer workshop manual describing setting up a diff - used "red lead" paint from memory presumably a variant of the "engineers blue" method. Do you want me to send you the relevent pages?

Thanks anyway but i've gone for the 'fettle it till it feels ok' method! Tried to fit it at the week-end only to find that 7" diff driveshafts don't fit 6.5" diffs So now i'm after some thinner driveshafts to match the new diff and save some weight

cheers

be a bit careful - there's a whole range of settings which will "feel" alright but won't be meshing the gears properly, that would lead to faster wear and weakness. I haven't been inside a small sierra diff, I know the mazda one uses a collapsing tube section to control the pinion position, and this would not be obviously an adjustment, if you know what I mean.

I haven't taken the pinion out, I only removed the large screw-in bearing carriers and took the crownwheel assembly out. As for the diffs lifespan it's unknown as yet....it might have already done 150,000mls for all I know (all the gubbins inside looked good though) and I'm still short of those driveshafts to try it out!..........I still have to wonder if it needs to go any faster though, had a good time chasing bikes back from Cadwell BSB yesterday
