Painting Donor Parts?
matt.c - 9/7/07 at 10:01 PM

Cleaned all the crud off the uprights diff etc now only leaving a little few spots of rust. Do anyone use any etch primers before using topcoat? What sort of paint to use? Sprayed or brushed?

Cheers all

Hammerite or Smoothrite is always a good favorite and use their primer if the component is completely rust free as it likes a bit of rust to latch onto.

My tried and trusted method is to brush on a good heavy coat and then spray the final coat - it leaves no brush marks that way and you get good coverage.

If you are in a hurry you can bake it off in the oven .... as long as swmbo isn't around at the time of course

I don't think that you can beat powder coating for uprights etc.

Paint will be ok for the diff

Cheers

I had hubs etc professionally de-rusted and zinc plated before etchpriming then several coats of smoothrite. Seem to have kept them trouble free up to now.

Used satin black over the top of the durable coats. Satin black for gearbox and diff too. dont use silver -looks old and crap very quickly. The only bit that has stayed Ok silver is the inlet manifold.
