Steering Arms
greggors84 - 14/10/03 at 10:23 PM

I cant get the steering arms apart so i can fit the MK extensions. They just dont want to budge.

I need to unscrew the thinner bit with the ball joint on from the bit that attaches to the rack.

Thanks

Greggors,

Do you mean you need to remove the track rod end?

If so then soak the locknut and surrounding area with penetrating oil (WD40 or similar) and leave for a while.
Then grip the track rod (bit between the locknut and steering rack) in a vice and use 2 spanners to loosen the locknut from the track rod end. You can the fit the extension piece to the track rod and re-fit the track rod end.

I've put a couple of pics in my archive showing before and after.

Don't seem to be able to uploadpictures to my archive - our network/firewall I expect.

You can see the pics in the August diary section on my website www.winchester7.com

i spent two or three days squirting with WD40, then got two 22mm spanners and wellied them off, worked quite well. careful with the heads. i cleaned the thread with a nail, but wasnt really necessary!

Cheers for that, i did mean the track rod ends, i havent looked at them for a while so forgot what bit i was trying to remove. I thought about it the other day and though i would ask before my memory goes blank again!
