I have just bought an IRS locost. I have two driveshafts the same length and they fit perfectly with the diff offset. But when I have this the prop flange looks as though it is running sraight into the tunnel wall. I have seen many pictures of sierra based IRS locosts with driveshafts the same size each side but I do not know how it works. Could it be because I have a cosworth LSD?

The drive shafts on the sierra are different lengths N/S and O/S.

The O/S shaft is longer, so if you use the same length shafts the diff will have to be offset and so could hit the tunnel.

Does anybody know how stuart taylor overcome this as both of their driveshafts are the same length. Is the tunnel wider?

It my understanding (and i'll prompt some ST owners to reply) that the ST diff is centrally mounted and two drive shafts of the same lenght are them used. I was under the impression that the two 'short' drive shafts where used but it could be the 'long' ones...

Bear in mind i've got a Capri rear axle!

You can have both a centrally mounted diff and equal length drive shafts.... if you want one of your wheels in the wrong place!

Bear in mind with the Sierra diff, although the diff (prop) flange is centrally mounted to the body and mountings of the diff, the drive shaft flanges are not equidistant from the centre line of the diff. Thus, you *must* have different length shafts.

The only other option is to not mount the diff centrally (you could off-set it approx' 1.5"/2" I suppose but I can't really see the point!
