Best have a look at the crown and pinion, when they start to whine, the lash is wrong and the gears are in the self distruct mode.

Normally diff whines don't normally start suddenly ---

Have you checked the oil level ??

Was the diff pinion disturbed ? --- did you strip the diff in anyway ? i.e. to renew the pinion seal ?

the back has been off the diff yes

maybe i didnt hear it for a start due to the excitement of being able to drive it

My diff has whined for 6 years 20,000 miles. You get used to it.

Yup i was concerned, when you come off the gas the noise was getting my attention

5 years on and you get used to it, spare diff sitting in garage just incase but i doubt it will get used.

Rememer in the siera the diff is not only further away from you its also got all that soundproofing, you are almost sitting on it in these cars.
