I'm thinking of upgrading the rear end and looking into the best way of doing it.

First of all with the brakes, im fully aware that you dont really "need" rear discs but they look rather coool.

At the moment ive got a normal diff (dont know what ratio yet) from the donor, push in shafts and drums. Correct me if im wrong but can you just change the diff internals to have LSD or is it better to get a whole unit.

It has been suggested to search for an XR 4x4 and snap the rear axle etc off of that?

Anybody know of any suppliers or scrappies that deal alot with these?

Also will i need to alter my uprights or should it be a straight swap?

pity I have a nice LSD but its bolt on

wel you can't have the ford LSD with push-in shafts
and the rear bearing carriers are different - they have the mounting lugs for the calipers apart from anything else

but you could keep you current setup and fit something like a quaife ATB + a rear disc conversion - its not the cheap option

I think you can make some 'hybrid' driveshafts if you have ones with the right number of splines (push-in one end bolt-on the other), but you'd still need a rear disc conversion

so the easy option would be the whole axle from something like an XR4x4 (or cossie 4x4)

what diff ratio would you like to have ?

there is always ebay (if you can find a rear end for sensible money)

If you have a bike engine fitted, all you're gonna be doing is adding extra weight which will have a negative effect on your power/weight ratio and you won't actually gain anything.

If however you have a car engine fitted, you're obviously not too concerned about bhp/tonne, so go for it.........

although the axle is basicaly the same, problem with the cossie 4x4 setup is the vented rear discs

they'll add even more weight to the rear


I'd ask yourself if you really need an LSD ?

and if not just get yourself a rear disc conversion kit if thats what you want - all you'll need from a donor is a pair of calipers with slider brackets (solid disc type)
and then a conversion kit (or a set of mounting brackets + pipes, cables, pads + discs to suit)


btw what size wheels have you got ? (i.e. make sure there are room for the discs )

IMHO the time, effort and money would be best spect on other things.

Have you had the car properly set up for corner weight, ride height, shock balance etc. If not then that's the best place to start - it will make abg difference to the way the car goes, corners and stops.
