Wobbly Cortina bearings
edspurrier - 3/8/08 at 09:37 PM

Started with two problems: lots of play on the left wheel bearing, such that the brake disc occasionally contacted the upright; on the right, the disc rotates off-axis and binds for about half the rotation. Cortina uprights.

So I bought new alloy hubs and bearings. This makes the left wheel a bit less wobbly, but not sufficiently so.

ANyubody have any good thoughts? I suppose the left stub axle can be either worn or wobbly - can it be tightened or replaced? And the right can either have the stub axle off centre or the brake disc warped.

So where can I get affordable COrtina uprights or just stub axles? How do I change or tighten the stub axles?

Thanks
Ed

sounds like damaged stubs, I had one that had had a bearing spun on it, and would never adjust up properly, ended up replacing it after failed attempts at using bearing fit (lasted about two miles before a slightly longer brake pedal travel gave the game away that it had let go again)

You can get replacement stubs from randall motorsport (£25 each), who can also bore out and thread your uprights to accept the replacement thread-in stubs (£17 each).

Excellent, thanks. I've ordered some "new" recon uprights from him which hopefully will have better stubs, otherwise I'll get some modified for those stubs.

SUspect teh disc is warped on the right though.

Perfect. Not a hint of wobble.

Of course I've had to rejig the brake caliper spacers and now the outer brake pad contacts the disc for about half the turn, but it's a different problem......
