Steering rack for a single seater
RobbyC - 8/9/08 at 12:15 PM

Afternoon all,
I'm building a single seater middie, and I'm trying to source a steering rack.

the slight problem being that I really need a steering rack with a central connection to the column, and it seems most cars have the connection to the side of the column.

Does anyone know of a steering rack with a central connection?

You should try Titan Motorsport. Have a look at
http://www.titan-motorsport.co.uk/

Do you actually need a centre spindle rack? - don't forget the column can't be straight for SVA unless it's collapsible (if this is for road use).
There are various racks around which are centre spindle such as above or Tilton, but they are expensive - I believe there are some grasstrack centre spindle racks, not sure if they are any cheaper.
I use the Fiat Cinqucento/seicento rack on the Furore, as does the Sprint R - it's small, light, cheap & has the spindle offset about 6 inches from centre. HTH

Try Dermot Healy - he's a well know bloke in the racing car world, sells all sort of secondhand racing car parts,

He's on 07703 162409 from the Oldham area
- NTDWM just helped me out with bits in the past.

Oooh, good man. That's what I wanted to hear.
The titan motorsport page had lots of options, used the workd "bespoke", and quoted no prices. This means I can't afford it.

So what is the setup in the furore? Seicento steering rack, with the seicenton column, and enough working room in the UJ for it all to work, or some special parts?

I use the Fiat rack & lower column with a Toyota upper column, but this is only because I use the Toyota MR2 as the donor for all bits except the Fiat rack. Can't see any reason why you couldn't use the Fiat upper column along with the lower column which has 2 u/j's.
Can send you some pics if you give me an email to send them to.

Try drdracing.co.uk. He does a rack for the autograss specials and it is relatively cheap.

ETA - £150 for the rack and £35 for a pair of arms.

hmm relatively cheap? to what the price of a stealth bomber...personally I'd spend that kind of money elsewhere

anyway as russbost says its safer with the shaft offset otherwise you could end up with a steering wheel in the face, been there, broken nose two black eyes, not nice

911's have a center spindle rack.

Get a quote from Titan! As long as the rack feed is offset from the wheel vertically, the horizontal alignment shouldn't make any real difference in the event of a crash. As long as there is a dog leg in at least one plane.

Keep an eye on ebay, I bought an example of this very item last week, quite old but includes mounts and arms for £75.00.....I was gonna buy one of Jamies (DRD) but this was too much of a bargain to let go

Well, thanks to some very helpful pictures from Russbost, I picked up a cheap used fiat seicento steering rack off ebay. May go for a fiat steering column too, keep it Italian to go with my alfa boxer engine. And rushed, low quality welds.
