Granted there is a lot to be said for following the trodden path but assuming a clean sheet design are there any opinions out there regarding better uprights than the usual ford Cortina/Sierra offerings.
I’m not talking raceleda light weight ford alternatives but genuine OEM products that could possibly offer the same weight advantages but available from a breakers.

I’m guessing the most likely sourses are going to be rear wheel drive cars of a more modern vintage. Perhaps Masda mx5 or rx7 how about BMW 3 series. I fully appreciate that with differing uprights will come the requirement to reverse engineer the suspension geometry to work with measurements dictated by the uprights. Just figure there might be some great alternatives out there!

The main reason for Cortina uprights is that the Cortina had a double wishbone front suspensions set up. So I guess you need to look for something with a similar arrangement.

I think the MX5 has this and also maybe some BMWs??

The MX5 uprights have been used by some and also Westfield have engineered a single donor car with MX5 parts. Check out their website.

the MX5 ones I have seen seem to tick the boxses ( weight, cost, availabilty 2nd hand ) Assume the Geomatry looks reasnoble ( rack of the eye )

Triumph Spitfire/Herald or the more meatier GT6/Vitesse. Available new and before anyone starts on about trunnions you can now buy ones quite easily that fit into a spherical joint at the bottom rather than a trunnion. Great geometry for a small sports car and all Caterhams use them in one form or another. Wont be as cheap as cortina uprights by the time you've finished (even buying a nasty rusty set of cortina ones at Ebay prices) which I suspect is why most people don't bother using them

Nissan Micra & Nissan Note (in other markets aka Eton and Tone) --- all thats required is take the shaft balls & cage out of the CV and make a bolt on fitting for the top ball joint.
