as above, i was told this is an escort but unless im having a blonde day i cant figure out how the slave cylinder goes on
please help!!!
Thats the wrong wheel cylinder by the looks of things. The cylinder you have is for the 9" drums where as those back-plates are 8" ones.
You need something along the lines of these for those backplates. :

There are a number of different cylinder internal diameters to choose from depending upon which spec car they are for. I believe these can be found in
the escort haynes manuals.
the back plates look like mk 2 escort with floating cylinders and self adjusters, the cylinder looks like mk 1 with manual adjusters
The back plates are Mark 1 Escort with 8" drums ie 1100/1300
The wheel cylinder is the wrong type it's off a mk2
The correct wheel cylinder is the same as fitted to the Triumph Herald, Viva, Imp and various other small British cars.
It is held in by two U shaped clips that interlock (the clips are a male and female).
This allows the wheel cylinder to slide in slot of the backplate.

Other thing is I think you will find the backplates are fitted to the wrong side of the car -- ie switched left to right.
im getting the feeling i should be converting to sierra discs
