Haynes Roadster - steering column problem?

I changed my steering wheel/boss for a smaller type - Mountney M range.
I noticed that this didn't fit as snug as the previous boss - more of the shaft of the column was visible. This then led to a bit of play as the c-clip on the column worked loose.
Anyway, I worked out the shaft moved up and down within the outer column if you loosened the clamp coupling joint (the one after it has passed through the bulkhead). So I thought I could tap the shaft further in to the column to reduce the play. This seemed to work, but then it worked loose again.
I think what I am asking, is the shaft one continuous piece all the way from the boss to the coupling on the other side of the bulkhead? Or, is there a joining piece where the shaft fits in a tube? The problem I now have is the shaft appears too short at both the boss end and the coupling end. Moving the outer column via the original steering adjustment affects the paddle shift.

PS I didn't build the car, hence the lack of understanding of the column.
