Squeaky Vectra brakes
joneh - 11/10/08 at 06:12 PM

Hi all,

I recently changed my rear Vectra brakes and they're annoyingly squeaky.

Is there a chance i've over tightened something, or will they bed in after 1000 or so miles?

Cheers,
Jon

An old guy who was sort of a family friend once advised my best mate to sort his squeeky brakes out with a quick squirt of WD40 onto the disc....

Don't do that.

Are the rears discs on the vectra? If so did you copper grease the back of the pad/piston? Makes a massive difference to squeeks.

Is it squeaky under braking (like a bus) or through the action i.e when you press the pedal? If it's under braking it's something to do with the discs rubbing, check for dirt grease ect and if that doesn't sort it replace the lot

It's constant squeeking, as i'm driving along.

I didn't copper grease them.

Looking at them, it may be where the discs have worn down, and a lip has been left which is rubbing against the new pad.

It looks like the new pad is in a slightly different position on the bracket, I'm guesing the old pad was wrong, or the halfords new pad is slighlty off centre. Possible manaufacturing error?

Quite possibly, I guess it would only need to be a few mm out when they stick the pad down so why not? Sounds to me like replacing the lot is a good idea and the least painful route

Has the handbrake cable got enough slack ? -- disc rear brakes need a fair ammount of free travel an the handbrake lever to let the self adjusters work. Normally the lever should come up to just over 50% of the ratchets range.

If the brake is " adjusted " by tensioning the cable two things will happen the cable will get pulled on slightly with suspension movement and the self adjusters won't work.
