Claims less play / likely hood of wear or am I still better going for a splined one from Rally Design (or similar) like this:

OR anyone got any recommended types or cheap places to get one from.

Not in a mega rush so even open to suggestions from the States etc (though dollar has got a lot stronger recently so not quite as attractive as it was a few months ago).

Seen these on a few grass racers (not used one myself) and they look good.

Make the guy an offer, he's been accepting much less than the BIN for them

Other bonus of going with one of those is that I can go colour coded and as we all know that is soooooooo TYTE! Next I'll be fitting some 19's and a mahogany dash kit.

I think its time I went to bed!

In what way are they dangerous? It doesn't look particularly weak if you see the thickness of the tube in the second picture.

Sorry for the off-topic but i couldn't resist doing it! Look at the rallydesign's picture. How difficult would it be to rotate the boss a bit so the damaged side was not visible?

Was talking about the one you linked to on ebay. It doesn't seem inherently dangerous to me, but would like to understand Hicost blades opinion. The most worrying bit about weld on bosses is the quality of the welding IMO.

The cars that have been through the workshop with them fitted all seem to have far to much play in them for my liking.

After having seen so many many over the years the only one that is a reasonable cost and has no play in it even after 5 years of use are the SPA ones. Good enough for top flight motorsport all over the world and seems to work on a kitcar also.

I am in complete agreement with Procomp quality over price, why would you want to save on such a safety critical item!?!. most the proper motorsport QR's (splined) are really a copy of the Racetech but most tend to forget the importance of hard anodising of the aluminium parts to stop them from becoming loose over time, each QR is also hand toloranced to ensure the perfect fit. At just £100 you get a LOT more engineering in the top of the line QR's. As for welding a nice way to do it is to stick the column in a lathe on the lowest RPM and hold the MIG torch still that way you get a nice steady uniform weld (AB performance can do this for you). Budget for about £170 and job should be done to a decent standard with the right bits. Basically my advice is if you can't afford to do it properly don't do it at all!.
