Best chain riviter/splitter.....

..... for large (530) size 'o ring' bike chains?

Can anyone recommend an easy to use tool which is reasonable quality and good value for money? If you know where to buy from as well, that would be great!

I bought mine from Talon Engineering (Yeovil), I'm unsure of the manufacture (and it's at home, I'm at work). I've split many chains with it, without having to prepare the pins, heavy duty kit, cost around £80 or so I remember.. but I can't be too sure (bought it with some chain and links as well as two specially made sprockets)

As Mr Whippy said angle grinder or bench grinder, so much cheaper than going out and buying 'another' tool that will only get used once or twice a year!

The issue here is two fold! One, an angry grinder puts a lot of heat into the surrounding chain which with rubber 'o rings' is not great. However, I am prepared to accept that with care, it can be used to shorten a chain. However, issue two, the angry grinder doesn't help me rivet the chain to the length I need.

So - question still stands, I am after a good value for money tool.

I understand the issues with the o-rings, but surely split links are better than riveting?

I will have a look through some catalogues in work and see if I can see a cheap spliter/riveter for you.

do you have a BSL bearing sevices ltd near you or that sort of factor anybody who sells chain and sprockets to industry should be able to get hold a decent tool or give you the tel no of Reynolds etc .or whose chain they are selling tel support no

Over breakfast this morning...

I have the 'UCT4060' RK Excel Chain Splitter/Riveter.

Works well for me, it has to, everything except the Transit is hair drier powered....

This one doesn't look too bad.

Any bikeit dealer will be able to offer it, you could also try M&P's (bike dealers).

520 and over recommend grinding the link anyway, you only take the bush off the top of the pin before you push it through so it shouldn't get too hot MPS have the same one as M&P. If you get someone to hold a lump hammer behind the chain you can bush the rivet with a punch. Split links with clips are not used on heavy chains, they are all rivetted on Japanese bikes.

All the Motion Pro stuff is good, you'll probably be nailed on the price in the UK though.

Riveting is safer than the split links.
