Is the engine mounted too high!?
PaulM - 30/10/15 at 11:41 AM

Probably pretty obvious, but I'm assuming the guy that built this car has mountd the engine too high given how the new bonnet is sitting? Has anyone else had this problem? Are there any off-the-shelf engine mounts for an MK with a 2.0 Zetec?

Yes, it is too high. Has the sump been shopped?

I made my own engine mounts, or rather, modified some MK Pinto mounts.

Looking at the engine mounts closer it looks like I need to fabricate some decent ones as these are shocking!!

Not sure about the dump as I haven't had it in the air yet but I'll take a look over the weekend.

Hi Paul,

If you were to get some Sierra engine mounts (metalastic) and remove the metal from below the angle metal coming off the engine I think you would drop the engine enough and give good vibration compensation.

regards

Bob

There's not enough thread showing through the lock nut either.

Yeah I think all round they probably need to be re-done. If I drop the drivers side the engine will be on too much of a slant and I don't think there's enough on the passenger side to drop it any further on those existing arms to keep the engine level. It also looks very close to a chasis rail beside the starter motor buldge on the bell housing. I don't like solid engine mounts anyway so those Sierra options might be a good option with new arms.

You need to keep the engine and drivetrain pretty still as many of the clearances are tight. I wouldn't use Sierra mounts. Most people use Landrover type mounts which are nice and stiff.

Vibration isn't really an issue.

This photo appears to show that large spacers were used, between the mount and the rubber bobbin. Why was this needed? Could it be that the builder was worried that he might have problems with an unshortened sump?

I also have a similar camshaft pulley clearance issue, which will need some glassfibre modification, both bonnet and nosecone. Howebver, although I have an MK chassis, it's a Locost, not an Indy, nd therefore the top rail is 1" lower.

All looks decidedly DIY with no understanding of engine mounting. Think I would be questioning all other aspects of the build as well.

...NOOOOOO please don't say that!! To be fair, the rest of it looks pretty good, with the exception of this, and some "modification" to a rear wishbone. The electric in particular are very neat.

You can allways get the mounts from mk. zetec is a standard fit. I also suspect the sump needs a chop..

The fella you bought it from used this forum and he too was unhappy about the engine mounts.
Redo them and move on. It's the only way you'll be happy!!

Really!? So all my challenges I'm posting are all elsewhere on this forum too!?

gaz_gaz - 30/10/15 at 09:34 PM

I think the fellas name was Ed?
Do a search for user Roohunter!

PaulM - 30/10/15 at 09:54 PM

Yep....found him!

A quick search and some pretty key details weren't discussed when I bought it!! Oh well, I like a challenge....although I must admit I'm already keen to build one from scratch!

PaulM - 3/11/15 at 07:21 PM

Sorted....hopefully!

Danny has now listed the engine mounts on the MK site and order placed :-)
