BEC with Live Axle suspension advice

Hi Guys,

I currently have avo shocks, they are 2.25 inch units or something close to that (they are bigger than 1.9 anyhow)

they fit the car fine, but its gone from a zetec to a bec, and now the suspension barely moves - so I'm after an upgrade.

I would like to know what shocks people recommend, what lengths I need on a live axle (as most stuff on here is advice on IRS setups) and what rate springs on a stripped out fireblade engined locost. Don't think it makes any difference, but I'm going to be running 13 inch wheels.

Also does anyone know a suplier for all the BIG bolts? I need a load of new ones and nuts for shocks, trailing arms etc. thought I may as well swap them out for when the new shocks go in.

Cheers

Why don't you just get some lower rated springs?

I am not confident that the shocks arn't seized. I bounce on the front of the chassis and get zero deflection, would rather get shiney new ones and know its right.

Hi.

The problem you have is that you currently have STD off the shelf valved dampers. On the live axle setup the damper is in a vertical position meaning that in most cases the STD off the shelf valving supplied by the damper manufacturers is OTT even on it's lowest setting.

Spring wise. Most run between 100Lb and 160Lb. 100Lb for the race circuits use driver only. And160 Lb for two up road use. You wont be far out with 140Lb for a compromise for trackday use and road use. As 140Lb is a std poundage available as is 120Lb but too soft for two up road use.

HTH cheers Matt

i am running avo 2.25 shocks and i have some 150lb 8 inch springs if you want to try some for not a lot of money, £20 plus postage? I also have some 180lb ones.

I find on the hardest setting (fully clockwise) i cant push the car down at all but fully soft the car car moves a lot so try unwinding the damper setting. If you can get a feel for what you like before you spend your money you will have more of an idea for what you need.

Hi,

I know a few people that have used AVO's on short circuit cars for years, the quite often get damaged and are sent back for rebuild. Have also sent them back for bespoke re-valving, gave them as much info as possible (i.e. weights (sprung and unsprung), leverages, type of vehicle) came back fully rebuilt and nowhere as expensive as new ones. I think a call could be a good idea.

Will concur here.

I have a CEC (vauxhall XE that most reckon is heavy lol) and use 140 lb rear springs. They are too heavy for just me in the car but it uses the bump stops on rough going if I go two up so that's life I guess!
