Spring rate formula

Having just knocked up a small spreadsheet to check some spring rates I thought I'd share it with you all. I know a lot of you don't know what springs you have fitted which makes things tricky when you want to go harder/softer.

All you need to measure is

Wire diameter (precise to 0.1mm or so)

Outside diameter (to within 0.5mm)

Total number of coils (to 0.1 coils)

Please note that this spreadsheet will only work with parallel, linear rate (same coil pitch on all coils) springs with 'normal' closed and ground ends.

Have fun

Cheers,

Mike

Hello Mr W,

I don't do a lot of work with leaf springs so I've not got one of my own. This one is off Jalopy Journal.com
