Diff Play

Right,

Rebuilt the diff/axle and now the car is on the ground, when I turn the pinion flange, it moves a few mm before it takes up the drive.

I know that the backlash has to be set in the diff, and I set it as best I could without the actual figures, when I adjusted the crown wheel for mesh, I backed it off one notch (on the locking plate) from when it was slightly binding (a slight tight spot on the crown wheel I think). It seemd OK so I rebuilt everything and fitted it to the car.

Can anyone tell me how much freeplay is acceptable in the input before taking up the drive.

JB

On my TR diff the backlash is around "5 mins" if you imagine the flange as a clockface...apparenly thats normal

I've got quite a degree of backlash in my diff. Makes a nasty crunching noise when it takes up the backlash as well Never measured it but it makes me winse!! Still hasn't broken yet though

But why did U take it apart? Was it because of the backlash or something else

The one in my car has probably 10 degs of play and definitely clonks on take up. Just a little too loose for my liking but. I've another second hand one untouched and that has less and another which was a recon unit and has 3-5 deg at most.

Maybe I'm being a worry wart for no reason then?

I'll try and measure the play tonight and put the result on here.
