Steering column extension welding

Hi Gents

I am at the stage of my Sylva Fury build where I need to cut and
lengthen the allegro (yes, allegro.. splines are identical to escort mk2) steering column linkage.

This requires the linkage to be cut through, sleeved and then
rewelded at either end. This then joins the splined stem of the rack itself and the main shaft of the escort mk2 column.

Given the nature of the component a few things are important:

1. A 'birds mouth' joint to ensure a greater weld contact area
2. Drilled and roll-pins added
3. sleeved job is straight and true
4. correct measuring !

Ideally I would like to just send this off to a professional / company
to do the job - Can anyone help with advice or contacts on this?

cheers all

Richard

My steering Q/R boss is just welded on.
Most steering columns have welded on UJ's so just sleeving/birdmouth and welding should be fine.
The column isn't subjected to the same forces as say a driveshaft and I have seen these welded up like that!

If you are really worried, get someone to TIG weld it. At least you know the welds will have penetrated (oh er missus! )

I am in Wycombe, Bucks, but the component can be sent anywhere for the modification.

Its simply not a job I would want to tackle myself, even if I could weld !

in reality it only has to be as strong as you are, since its you who's turning the wheel.

The roll pins are a 'boot and braces' approach. The welding should be strong enough, but mainly its peace of mind that the thing can't fail on me..

I drilled the tube - two through holes in each end , with a generous overlap , and then puddle welded in four places .
It's survived six years use and a couple of crashes

I cut my extension tube ends at 45° to give more weld area and didn't bother with anything else.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.
