Adjusting FWD diff half shaft bearings

Hi guys

Bit long winded but its rather hard to describe...

I have a Zafira that one of the drive shafts can rock a bit on the inside joint where it goes into the diff on the gearbox. To me it looks like play on the roller bearings in the diff housing and not anything to do with the joint itself.

Prob is I've never adjusted one of these before. On the outside and only one side of the diff housing is some sort of large ring, with teeth and a locking plate that the CV joint goes through, which I assume you rotate to adjust the pressure on the bearing, much like wheel bearings.

Is that how you take the play out??? Just turn the ring a bit till there's no play??

The gearbox oil was very cleen and I see no wear at all on the diff teeth etc.

Anyone know??

Thanks

Hey Whip where've you been then?

If the bearings moving then it must be worn (no?) I'd be concerned about tightneing it and the knackering it/transaxle.

oh just been busy, still messing about with cars

not sure why the joint moves tbh seen it in other cars but not sure if its normal or if its the just bearing play. I can feel vibration through the steering and there's a slight howling noise that increase in note with speed but is not related to the engine speed or load. I'm thinking its the drive shaft vibrating due to the play (its the long one with the mass damper) as everything else looks fine.

The manual is next to useless and doesn't go into any detail on the gearbox apart from changing drive shaft oil seals.

Any ideas??

cheers

Usually those are normal ball bearings with no adjustment.

The play will between the sun gear and diff itself not between the diff and the transmission casing.
